Fact or Fiction -- December 2023

Hello everyone. It is time for our last installment of Fact or Fiction for 2023. Since we have done this 11 times previously, everyone should know how this works. 🙂

Let me know your thoughts on the following statement:

Fact or Fiction: Cognos Reporting users can only see data for those employees for whom they are the BI Manager.

Tell me what you think and please provide your reasoning/explanation. I'll look forward to your replies.

Thank you,

@KevinD - Fiction - they will see data based on the permissions they are given in the User Permissions > Reporting and the groups defined on their role assignments.

Fiction: Cognos Reporting users should be able to see all the data stored in the Team Content tab.

From ACT training

"A Reporting Hierarchy is not part of the BI Manager functionality. The BI Manager functionality & Reporting Hierarchy are
distinct and do not rely on each other."

False... if they are a cognos reporting user, they will be able to see everything. However, if reports are burst to them, the bursted report that is pushed to them will only include the employees for which they are a BI manager.

Thank you to those who replied and thanks to everyone who participated in the Fact or Fiction series throughout the year.

Here is this month's answer.

Fact or Fiction: Cognos Reporting users can only see data for those employees for whom they are the BI Manager.

Fiction: The BI Manager role does limit the data you can see. However, if you assign a Cognos role (Consumer, Business Author, Professional Author) that role can allow the user to see data for the entire company or for as many Groups you assign to the Cognos user.
