Using Audit Rules to get pre-trip approval

We want to switch from Concur Request to using Audit Rules to get pre-trip approval.  Request has all kinds of challenges, most especially, not being able to change a trip once it's approved (you have to call your agency to make changes).  I've been told that I can use Audit Rules to get travel approvals - either hard stop or notify manager and wonder if anyone has done that and can share their experience.
