Hotel cancellation charges I'm confused

When the cancellation policy of a hotel states a fee (usually one night's rate) is that fee only charged if you cancel after the date that they specify or is that fee charged if you cancel anytime prior to the stay?

@MJW as far as I understand it, they set a date and time that you can cancel by. If you don't cancel by then, you get charged. However, each hotel is different. Also, it might depend on the room and rate you booked. Maybe the room and rate had a different cancelation policy. You would really need to call the hotel and ask them.

Kevin, I cancelled with the hotel and have a cancelation number. Do I still need to cancel the hotel in Concur? I started to but stopped because it said there was a cancellation fee. The hotel is NOT charging a fee.
